Covid-19 Vaccination in Women Planning for Pregnancy

Preconception Covid-19 Vaccination

It is expected that most pregnant women who become infected with Covid-19 will only experience mild cold and flu-like symptoms. However, pregnant women are potentially at increased risk of respiratory complications from a Covid-19 infection. In particular, women with medical co-morbidities are at increased risk of hospital admission, respiratory support and severe illness.

As such, women planning for pregnancy are encouraged to undergo Covid-19 vaccination, especially if they are at increased risk of becoming infected (e.g. a frontline healthcare worker) or if they have medical comorbidities that can increase the risk of severe illness resulting from a Covid-19 infection.

With the available data, there is no evidence that women who become pregnant after receiving the vaccine are at increased risk of teratogenicity, miscarriage or maternal illness. Therefore, pregnancy need not be delayed after receiving the vaccine.
